Then the delivery date slips, or the spec is wrong, or the documentation doesn't meet the engineer's requirements. And they end up spending whatever they saved—and then some—to fix a problem that shouldn't have existed.

There's a phrase we use: cheap is expensive. The lowest quote rarely ends up being the lowest total cost once you account for the time spent chasing the vendor, the rescheduling, the crew standing around, the engineer's patience running out.

And if you're already in a bind? Don't waste time comparing quotes on the cheapest overnight option. Do the math. Spend the money to buy certainty. The guy who pays $500 extra to avoid a $10,000 loss looks smart in hindsight. But in the moment, it just feels like getting punched in the wallet.

I'd rather get punched in the wallet than in the reputation.
