The Cheapest Quote Is Usually the Most Expensive: What Sika Floor Adhesive, AnchorFix, and an Arkansas Powder Coating Shop Taught Me About Total Cost
The most expensive sentence I ever said in a procurement meeting was: “The cheaper one will work.”
It didn’t sound dangerous. It sounded smart. Three words later, I had signed a substitution request that ended up costing roughly $4,800 in rework and one very long Saturday.
That mistake changed how I buy building materials. In my opinion, too many project teams compare the wrong numbers. They compare line-item prices and call it cost analysis. I’d argue the true purchase price is only the first item in a much longer list.
The $4,800 Floor Adhesive Lesson
Back in 2019, I was managing materials for a commercial renovation. The floor spec called for a Sika floor adhesive. It was not an exotic product. It was a product I had used before, and the technical sheet gave us what we needed: coverage rates, open time, cure time, and moisture data.

Here is what I include:
- Material cost, calculated by coverage, not by bucket. A cheap product might require two coats where a better product requires one.
- Labor and cure time. If a product makes the crew wait an extra day, that day has a price.
- Technical support. Can the supplier answer questions before, during, and after the job?
- Documentation. Is there a real datasheet, a chemical resistance table, or published test results?
- Batch traceability and shelf life. If something fails, can you trace it back?
- Risk of rework and credibility damage. This is the cost people forget because it is not on the purchase order.
Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), claims need to be truthful and substantiated. I use that as a plain-language filter: if a sales rep can’t substantiate a claim with a document, I no longer sign the substitution form.
The Anchor Adhesive Cartridge I Almost Swapped to Save $9.80
Here is where I almost repeated the same mistake for a much smaller reward.

I get it. I used to think the same thing. There are situations where a generic product is perfectly fine. I have bought generic materials when the application was low-risk and the documentation was adequate.
But that is not my argument. My argument is that the lowest unit price is not automatically the lowest total cost. A brand name is not a promise by itself. A technical datasheet is the beginning of the promise. If the name-brand product does not have the right data for my application, I won’t use it. If a generic product has the data, I will consider it.
So here is my opinion, restated simply: stop comparing prices before comparing costs. The extra research takes an hour. The rework can take a month. In my experience, the “cheaper” option usually becomes expensive the moment something unexpected happens. The known product with documentation is not always the cheapest quote. But more often than not, it is the one that ends up costing what it was supposed to cost.
