Sika Elastomeric Coating, Sikadur Injection Gel, and Epoxy Resin Floors: A Scenario-Based Buyer's Guide

If you manage purchasing for a building, you've probably searched “sika” and ended up with a screen full of product names that look like they were made by an AI name generator. Sealants, coatings, injection gels, adhesives, floor resins. The hard part isn't finding a product. It's finding the one that matches your job.

I'm an office administrator for a 180-person company, and I manage the maintenance and facilities ordering—roughly $120,000 annually across 12 vendors. Maybe $115,000—I'd have to check the system. I report to both operations and finance, so I hear about it when an order misses the mark. The point is: I've ordered enough to have made every mistake. I'm not an engineer. I'm the person who gets called when the maintenance supervisor says, “this isn't what I asked for.” That's happened. More than once.

So here's my practical, non-infinite-catalog guide to the Sika products that come up most, split by scenario. There's no universal “best Sika product.” There's only the right product for the substrate, the exposure, and the goal.

Before you order: know which kind of problem you're solving

The question isn't “which Sika product is best?” The question is “what is your substrate and your exposure?” A product that's excellent for a leaking deck will be useless for a cracked foundation. That's not a defect in the product. It's a mismatch between product and job.

I think about Sika orders in four buckets:

  • Structural cracks and anchoring — load needs to transfer through the adhesive.
  • Exterior waterproofing and UV exposure — the coating needs to move with the substrate.
  • Seamless floors that take chemical and mechanical abuse — resin floor systems.
  • Adhesive at the hardware/beauty counter — not a construction category.

If you're not sure which bucket you're in, don't order. Call the rep first.

Scenario A: Structural cracks, dowels, or anchoring—reach for Sika Sikadur Injection Gel epoxy paste adhesive

If you're filling a crack in a concrete foundation or anchoring a threaded rod into a slab, you need an epoxy adhesive that can transfer load. Sika Sikadur Injection Gel epoxy paste adhesive is designed for exactly that: it's a two-component epoxy paste for crack injection and structural bonding. The gel consistency matters. It stays in the crack instead of running out.

I didn't fully understand the difference between a flexible sealant and a structural epoxy until a gate bracket came loose in 2023. We used a construction adhesive from a hardware store because it was already in the supply closet. It held for a week. Then the bracket pulled out, the gate swung into a parked forklift, and the repair bill came to about $2,800. The supplier had told me to check the compressive strength. I didn't. Lesson learned. Period.

Everyone told me to check the technical data sheet before ordering. I only believed it after that $2,800 mistake. Now the datasheet version gets written on every purchase order.

Do not confuse Sikadur Injection Gel with an elastomeric coating. The coating is flexible and waterproof. The injection gel is rigid and load-bearing. They're both Sika products, but they solve opposite problems.

Scenario B: Exterior walls, traffic decks, and UV exposure—consider Sika elastomeric coating

If the problem is a leaking exterior wall or a traffic-bearing deck, you need a coating that can move with the substrate. Sika elastomeric coating is a liquid-applied membrane that stretches, bridges hairline cracks, and keeps water out. This is not decorative paint. What I mean is: it's a waterproofing layer first, and a finish second.

People often ask me, “does ceramic coating protect against UV?” The short answer: some ceramic coatings do block UV, but that doesn't mean they belong on a concrete wall. Ceramic coatings can be excellent for metal or automotive surfaces. For a masonry exterior, a flexible elastomeric coating usually makes more sense because the substrate expands and contracts. A rigid ceramic film can crack. UV protection is a separate spec, not an automatic feature. Check the technical data sheet for an “exterior-rated” or “UV-stable” topcoat. As of April 2025, the Sika elastomeric coating data sheets I've seen list UV resistance by color line. Don't assume every color performs the same.

Don't expect an elastomeric coating to fix a structural crack that is still moving. If the crack is active, stop the movement or inject it first, then coat. We once coated a wall without fixing the crack (this was back in 2022), and the coating blistered by the next spring. Put another way: a coating that doesn't stretch doesn't belong on a moving wall.

If you're trying to match a corporate color, don't trust a photo on a screen. Ask for a cured sample and compare it under daylight. Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors (Pantone). Above 4, most people will notice the difference. A supplier can give you the actual Delta E if you ask for it.

Scenario C: When the floor has to take abuse—look at immersive epoxy resin floor systems

If you're searching for an immersive epoxy resin floor, you probably don't want a thin paint. You want a seamless, fully-bonded resin floor system that resists chemicals, abrasion, and repeated washing. “Immersive” is the right word: the resin encapsulates the slab, so spills don't soak in and dust doesn't form.

Sika's Sikafloor range includes many systems: epoxy, polyurethane, polyaspartic. The first decision is exposure. Forklift traffic, slip resistance, and chemical cleaning require different topcoats. If you need resistance to specific chemicals, check Sika's chemical resistance chart before ordering. That chart is the kind of document a buyer should attach to the purchase order, because it lists exposure ratings for each system.

One caution: some floor specifiers use “immersive” to mean full immersion service in chemicals, not just a decorative coating. If your process involves continuous contact with aggressive chemicals, that is a much higher-performance spec than a standard workshop floor. The chemical resistance chart will tell you which systems qualify. Don't guess.

A resin floor install isn't a weekend DIY. There's substrate prep, primer, base coat, and topcoat. The fastest way to create a problem is to mix products from different manufacturers and hope they're compatible. Order the complete system from one source, with the datasheets, and let the installer follow that spec.

Wait, what about “kiss strip lash adhesive”?

If you typed “kiss strip lash adhesive,” this is not the article you were looking for. That's an eyelash adhesive, not a construction chemical. It is not a Sika product, and you should not use it on concrete, metal, flooring, or anything else in a facility.

But this search confusion is a useful lesson for buyers: “adhesive” is an enormous category. A lash adhesive, a tile adhesive, and an epoxy paste adhesive share a word and almost nothing else. The product name alone is not enough. Always verify the technical data sheet matches the substrate, the loading, and the environment.

How to figure out which scenario you're in

Here's the decision path I wish someone had walked me through in 2021:

  1. Is the job carrying a load or holding concrete together? Go with a structural epoxy paste like Sikadur Injection Gel.
  2. Is the job keeping water out of an exterior wall or traffic deck? Look for a flexible, UV-stable elastomeric coating.
  3. Is the job a floor that needs to survive chemicals and washing? Investigate immersive epoxy resin floor systems.
  4. Are you shopping for false lashes? You're definitely on the wrong page.

When you find a candidate, open the current technical data sheet and look for three numbers: compressive strength (for structural bonding), UV stability and percent elongation (for exterior coatings), and chemical resistance ratings (for floors). If the datasheet doesn't list them, ask why.

If you still aren't sure, call a Sika representative. The worst purchase in facility maintenance is a product that is 90% right. It costs more to remove and reapply the wrong coating than it does to spend one hour on the phone getting the specification correct.

One caveat: product names and formulations change. This was accurate as of April 2025. Verify current technical data sheets on the Sika website before approving any purchase. My experience is mostly light-industrial and commercial buildings. If you're in heavy chemical processing, you need a Sika application engineer, not a blog post.
