The Strongest Sealant Isn't the Best One

I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a specialty chemicals company. We produce about 50,000 units of adhesives, sealants, and coatings every year, and I review each batch before it ships—roughly 200+ unique formulations annually. In 2024, I rejected about 8% of first production runs because the spec didn't match the intended use. That's not a chemistry problem. It's a selection problem.

Here's the opinion I keep coming back to: the strongest product is usually the wrong one. Strong isn't a purpose. When you choose a sealant based on strength alone, you end up with a $90 tube of marine adhesive on your interior baseboards.

The Marine Sealant Overkill

Take Sika marine adhesive sealant. It's genuinely impressive—formulated to handle saltwater, UV, constant vibration, and thermal cycling. If I'm bonding anything on a boat, that's my go-to. But I've seen contractors use it to install kitchen window trim. That's not a product failure; it's a specification failure. Actually, it's worse than that: it's a money failure.

It's the same logic as art supplies. You wouldn't use oil paints on a watercolor canvas unless you were deliberately mixing media. The tools have to match the medium. Using a marine-grade sealant indoors is like buying expensive brushes and canvases when a simple acrylic caulk does the job better—easier to apply, easier to paint over, and a fraction of the cost.

Last year, a distributor ordered 5,000 cartridges of marine sealant for a residential builder. The builder wanted a bathroom sealant that could handle occasional moisture. Marine sealant would have worked, but so would a standard sanitary sealant at one-third the cost. We swapped the order after a quick conversation. The distributor kept the customer, and we kept a reputation for honest advice.

Rebar Coating: “Always” Is Not an Engineering Reason

Conventional wisdom says you always coat rebar before pouring concrete. I wrote that spec myself for years. Then in Q1 2024, I reviewed plans for a temporary retaining wall—designed to last eighteen months, then be demolished. The engineer had called for Sika rebar coating on every bar. When I asked why, the answer was “it's standard practice.”

That's not a reason. The coating adds material cost, labor, and lead time. For a temporary structure in dry soil, the corrosion risk is minimal. The coating would have been pure insurance on a building that wasn't going to be around long enough to benefit from it.

So glad I caught that before it went to contract. We saved about $18,000 on that line item, and the project launched a week early. That's not an argument against rebar coating—it's an argument against using “always” as a substitute for thinking. Since then, I require a written justification for any premium coating on temporary structures.

The Strongest Bond Can Break the Part

Here's the counterintuitive one: sometimes a more powerful adhesive is more likely to fail. I see this frequently in screen printable adhesives used for electronics assembly. The goal isn't maximum bond strength; it's a material that can be deposited through a mesh stencil, cure at a low temperature, and stay flexible enough for thermal expansion. If you swap in a high-strength structural adhesive, you might get a stronger bond—but it might be too thick to print, cure too hot, or become so rigid that the substrate cracks under stress.

Same logic applies to floor coatings and traffic coatings. A rigid, high-modulus coating on a concrete slab that moves will crack. A flexible product with lower tensile strength will flex and survive. So when a customer asks, “which product is the strongest?”, I now ask: “what's the substrate, what's the movement, what's the service environment?”

It took me four years and a lot of returned batches to understand that “strongest” is the wrong filter.

What About “It's Always Worked for Me”?

I hear that from contractors all the time. “I've been using the same product for 20 years and never had a problem.” Maybe that's true. But here's what I've learned reviewing hundreds of returns: people don't see the failures that didn't happen. They also don't see the cost of over-speccing. A product that's stronger than needed isn't “safe”—it's just expensive.

I've seen a $22,000 redo caused by an adhesive that was too strong. It bonded perfectly, but the rigid bond line couldn't handle the substrate's thermal movement, so the panel cracked. The contractor swore by that product for years. He just hadn't used it on this type of siding before.

And if you think “sealant” is a single category, consider this: search for “can you get sealants on teeth with fillings” and you'll get dental protective coatings, not construction adhesives. The word “sealant” covers everything from teeth to decks. Different substrates, different chemistries, different rules. You wouldn't ask a dentist for a construction recommendation. So don't ask your construction supplier for “the strongest” without describing the job.

Honest Limitations Build Trust

Per FTC advertising guidelines, claims have to be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated with evidence. That's a legal baseline. But for me, the real reason to be honest about limitations is reputation. When I recommend Sika marine adhesive sealant for a boat, I can back it up with test data. When I say it's not worth the money for interior trim, the customer sees I'm not just moving inventory. When you account for total cost of ownership—base price, labor, and redo risk—the over-specified product is usually the most expensive one. That credibility is worth more than any upsell.

So here's my rule: recommend the right product for the right job, and say when a product isn't the right fit. If that means losing a few high-margin sales, so be it. In the long run, the trust is worth more than the short-term margin.

The strongest sealant isn't the best sealant. The best sealant is the one that fits the application.
