It Started With a Spec Doc That Didn’t Match Reality

Last October, I sat in a conference room across from a project manager who was not happy. We’d just received a batch of adhesive for a $42,000 commercial flooring job, and the numbers didn’t align. Do Resins Vary Between Brands? Absolutely—And Here’s Proof

This brings me to the elephant in the room: do resins vary between brands? Yes. And the difference is rarely about raw chemistry alone. It’s about consistency, documentation, and the rigor of the manufacturing process.

Let’s talk about Neste renewable polymers and chemicals. Neste is a supplier of renewable raw materials for resins. But a resin brand might buy its base polymer from Neste and still produce a final product that varies wildly because of how it’s compounded, stabilized, or tested. The resin itself is just the foundation; the formulation and quality system are what separates a reliable product from a gamble.

To test this, I ran a blind comparison with our technical team: same application—wood-to-concrete with hybrid adhesive—comparing the failed batch against a retail-grade strong adhesive tape (yes, tape, just to see the baseline) and the Sika T100. Results?

  • Failed batch: Cured tensile strength — 6.2 N/mm²
  • Strong adhesive tape: Not applicable for permanent bond, but peel strength was 4.5 N/cm
  • Sika T100 all in one hybrid wood adhesive: 8.1 N/mm² after 7 days

Now every contract we sign includes a clause that the first delivery is subject to independent lab testing within 30 days. If the results deviate by more than 5% from the datasheet, the vendor pays for retesting and rework. This wasn’t in our contracts before. Now it is.

And for this job? We went with Sika’s resin flooring system for the concrete subfloor and the T100 hybrid adhesive for the wood-to-concrete bond. The project was completed on schedule, passed all adhesion tests, and the client reported zero issues after six months of use. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven’t changed—you still need proper surface preparation, correct mixing ratios, and valid curing conditions. But the execution has transformed. Better raw materials like Neste’s renewable polymers, more rigorous quality protocols, and brands like Sika that invest in traceability have raised the bar.

Personally, I’ve seen too many projects fail because someone assumed a brand name or a low price meant the same thing as verified performance. The way I see it, using a product like Sika T100 isn’t about paying more—it’s about paying for certainty. And in our business, certainty is worth every dollar.

If you’re specifying materials for a flooring or adhesive project, don’t just look at the datasheet. Ask for batch records. Ask for independent test data. And if a vendor can’t provide that quickly, take that as a sign. The cost of verification is a fraction of the cost of failure.
